Some parasites have been strongly linked to cancer. For example, Schistosoma haematobium, a parasitic worm found in contaminated water, is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), due to its established link to bladder cancer (IARC, 2012). Similarly, liver flukes such as Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis are associated with bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), especially in regions of Southeast Asia (Sripa et al., 2007). Chronic parasitic infections can lead to long-term inflammation, tissue damage, and DNA mutations — all of which are known to increase cancer risk over time (Parkin, 2006). It’s important to be clear — the parasites most strongly linked to cancer, like Schistosoma haematobium and certain liver flukes, are primarily found in specific regions like parts of Africa and Southeast Asia.
